Shanly family fonds. - 17 July 1867 ? 1899.
Biographical sketch :
The Shanly family is represented by two of its
members, Francis and Walter, each of whom played a
role in railway history in Canada. Of Irish
origin, they arrived in Canada at the beginning of
the great famine. Francis Shanly was born in 1822.
He became a civil engineer and worked with others
alongside Colonel Gzowski on the Beauharnois Canal
and for the Grand Trunk Railway between 1858 and
1862. He and his brother established their own
company from 1869 to 1875. William also went into
politics in 1863 and sat in Parliament. He died in
1899.
Custodial history :
Fonds transferred to the Association Archives in 1975, through the efforts of Dr. Nicholls.
Scope and content :
The Shanly family fonds shows the family genealogy
including, amongst others, Francis Shanly and
Walter Shanly, both civil engineers for the Grand
Trunk Pacific between 1858 and 1862.
The fonds
consists of an annotated genealogical tree,
personal journals, press clippings, postcards and
a speech to the electors of Grenville.
