Montreal Tramways Company fonds. - 1904-1939.
Administrative history :
The Montreal Tramways Company was incorporated 24
March 1911 at Montreal. That same year it
purchased the Montreal Terminal Railway Company
and the Montreal Street Railway Company, as well
as the Suburban Tramway and Power Company and the
Montreal Park and Island Railway Company. On 18
June 1951 the Montreal Transportation Commission
became the sole shareholder of the Montreal
Tramways Company.
The Montreal Tramways Company
territory included all of the Island of Montreal.
Its mandate was to facilitate the transport of
passengers by means of a rapid and efficient
transit system. The company also carried mail and
merchandise. Its mandate was enlarged to allow it
to extend its system to the South Shore of
Montreal. The company is administered by ten
shareholders, members of the Board of Directors.
Custodial history :
Fonds transferred to the Association archives in 1972 through the intermediary of Peter Murphy.
Scope and content :
The Montreal Tramways Company fonds shows the
evolution of streetcar transportation on the
Island of Montreal between 1904 and 1939. It
illustrates the various types of rolling stock
used, construction of tracks, stations, termini,
damaged cars, workshops, as well as pictures of
the City of Montreal.
The fonds consists of
glass negatives.
