Edward Beatty fonds. - 1879-1938.
Biographical sketch :
Edward Wentworth Beatty was born at Thorold
Ontario on 16 October 1877. He was the son of
Henry Beatty and Harriet M. Powell. Edward studied
law and was admitted to the bar in 1901. Edward
Beatty died in Montreal 23 March 1943. He began
his career with the Canadian Pacific Railway in
1901 in the Legal Department as assistant to the
Solicitor-General. He was very quickly noticed by
the President, Lord Shaugnessy, whom he succeeded
as the youngest President of the company, the post
he held from 1918 to 1943.
Edward Beatty was
also Chancellor of McGill University for
twenty-three years.
Custodial history :
The fonds was transferred to the Association archives in 1965 by the estate of Mary Beatty, his sister.
Scope and content :
The fonds outlines the career of Edward Beatty as
President of the Canadian Pacific Railway from
1918 to 1943, particularly with respect to social
events. The fonds also deals with the
administration of the Intercolonial Railway
between 1890 and 1892. The fonds also relates to
the activities of his father, Henry Beatty.
The
fonds contains speeches, correspondence,
photographs, brochures, banquet menus and
certificates.

The documents in the fonds are in English. There
are index cards for the photographs and the
speeches. See the Edward Beatty fonds, held at the

Montreal. See the fonds of the Canadian Pacific
Railways Navigation Department, PA-005. Included
with this fonds are the documents donated by the
estate of Mary Beatty. Certain documents relate to
the father, Henry Beatty.
