Canadian Pacific Railway fonds. - 1883-1997.
Administrative history :
The Canadian Pacific Railway was founded in 1881.
Its first President was George Stephen and the
General Manager William Cornelius Van Horne. The
first transcontinental line was completed in 1885.
The company then put its emphasis on colonization,
immigration and agriculture in the Canadian west.
The Canadian Pacific Railway operated a vast
shipping fleet and a cross-country chain of
hotels. It later had its own airline. In 1950
diesel replaced steam. To try to slow the decrease
in passenger traffic, the CPR launched the
cross-country "Canadian" train with panorama cars.
In 1962 Canadian Pacific Limited was established
for all its businesses other than railways. In
1968 new logos were developed to differentiate
each division. In 1971 the Canadian Pacific
Railway became Canadian Pacific Limited. The last
change occurred in 1995, with creation of the St.
Lawrence & Hudson Railway, an independent
subsidiary that serves the entire eastern part of
the country.
