Henry Holgate fonds. - 1889-1899.
Biographical sketch :
Henry Holgate was born in 1863. He was married in
1888 and had three children. Educated as a civil
engineer, he worked for the Northern Railway of
Canada from 1884 until 1892. From 1894 to 1897 he
directed construction of the Montreal Park and
Island Railway. He drew up the plans for the
stations on Prince and Saint-Ignace Streets.
Beginning in 1897 he became director of
development for the railway in Jamaica. In 1907 he
became Chairman of the Commission investigating
the collapse of the Quebec bridge.
Custodial history :
Fonds transferred to the Association archives by his nephew, Mr. Montagu Yates, about 1972.
Scope and content :
The fonds deals with Henry Holgate's career as a
civil engineer with several railway companies,
including the Northern Railway of Canada from 1884
to 1892, the Montreal Park and Island Railway from
1894 to 1897, plus his career in Jamaica from 1897
to 1899. The fonds also covers his family life.
The fonds consists of personal journals.
