Canadian Railroad Historical Association fonds. - 1932-1998.

Custodial history :
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first railway in Canada, a group of enthusiasts decided to found the Canadian Railroad Historical Association in March 1932. Its first President was John Loye. The first official meeting took place on 06 April 1932 with, amongst others, Mrs. Bevington, R.R. Brown, Robert Nicholls, W.M. Spriggs. They decided that the Board would meet once a month, except in summer. The charter was signed on 22 August 1941 by John Loye, Frederick James McClure, Donald Forbes Angus, William Graham Cole, William Ernest Foster, Mable Elizabeth Bevington, Charles Viau and Charles L. Terroux. In 1954, the Association acquired its first item of rolling stock, streetcar MTC 274, with the aim of starting a museum. In 1961 the Association did establish a museum to preserve and promote railway heritage.
On 24 August 1984, the Canadian Railroad Historical Association changed its name to the Canadian Railroad Historical Association - Association canadienne d'histoire ferroviaire. The Canadian Railroad Historical Association is a not-for-profit organization whose objectives are the preservation and distribution of textual and pictorial information concerning railway heritage in Canada, as well as the acquisition of artifacts, archival documents and other items representative of the development of railway technology in Canada. The Association manages a museum, a documentation centre and an archive.
The documents have been transferred to the Association's archives by various members.

Scope and content :
The fonds demonstrates the activities of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association from its beginnings until 1998. The fonds also illustrates the history and technological evolution of railways and rail-based transportation in Canada from its beginnings to 1998.
The fonds includes minutes of meetings, administrative documents, activity reports, research documents, publications including Canadian Rail, correspondence, videos, photographs and technical drawings.

Physical description : Approximately 15 m of textual material. - Approximately 1500 photographs. - approx. 25 videos. - approx. 25 sound items.

General note : Minutes of meetings are classified in chronological order. Administrative documents are segregated by President. The documents in the fonds are in English and French.
