Alan Toohey fonds. - 1946-1954.
Biographical sketch :
E. Alan Toohey was born in Montreal. He became an
amateur photographer and a great railway fan. He
was a member of the Canadian Railway Historical
Association from 1947. He was the first editor of
the magazine Canadian Rail from 1949 and
1953.
He died in a motorcycle accident in
Africa in 1955.
Custodial history :
Fonds donated by Alan Toohey's sister, Ruth Toohey, in February 1993 and transferred to the Association archives in April 1998.
Scope and content :
The Alan Toohey fonds relates to rail
transportation in Canada, the United States, as
well as Great Britain between 1946 and 1954. The
fonds deals with steam and diesel-electric
locomotives, streetcars and trolley-buses. The
principal railway companies represented are the
Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canadian National,
the Quebec Railway Light and Power Co., the
Niagara St. Catherines & Toronto Railway, the
Shawinigan Falls Terminal Railway, the Napierville
Junction Railway, as well as the Sydney and
Louisbourg Railway. Canadian tramway companies
shown are the Montreal and Southern Counties, the
Cornwall Street Railway, the Montreal Tramways
Company, the Ottawa Electric Railway, and the
Cornwall Electric Railway. The fonds also deals
with stations, marshalling yards, roundhouses and
bridges. The fonds also shows Association
excursions between 1947 and 1953.
The fonds
comprises negatives, photographs, tickets and
transfers, as well as slides.

3987 photographs: negatives. - 300 photographs. - 108 train and tramway tickets.

Title based on the contents of the fonds. The slides are separated from the rest of the fonds. Some photographs have been copied by the Association for consultation purposes.
