Charles Worthington Spencer fonds. - 1880-1958.
Biographical sketch :
Charles Worthington Spencer was born at
Kemptville, Ontario, 31 October 1857. He began his
railway career in May 1871 as an operator at the
Ottawa station. He joined the Canadian Pacific
Railway in 1881, as Superintendent of the Eastern
Division. He later became General Manager of this
Division until September 1905 when he resigned
from the Canadian Pacific Railway to join the firm
of Mackenzie and Mann. There he became General
Manager of construction, responsible for the
Canadian Northern Railway line between Fort
William and the maritime provinces.

Fonds transferred to the Association's archives by C.A. Spencer, son of Charles W. Spencer, 28 August 1966.
Scope and content :
The fonds relates to the career of Charles
Worthington Spencer while he was General Manager
of the Eastern Division of the Canadian Pacific
Railway, between 1881 and September 1905. It
demonstrates the importance of a train despatcher.
The fonds also shows the evolution of construction
of the railway line in the western part of the
country.
The fonds consists of annotated time
tables, brochures, annual reports, photographs by
photographers Notman and Buell, and railway
passes.

1 m of textual material. - 250 photographs. - Approximately 1200 passes: railway and ships. - 2 photograph albums.
General note :
Title based on the contents of the fonds. The two
albums of Notman photographs require restoration.
The documents in the fonds are in English. There
are index cards for the photographs and the
photograph albums. There are negatives and copies
of the photographs to facilitate consultation. The
passes were originally held in 66 albums whose
contents had been changed. The stamp with the name
of CW Spencer on all the documents was applied by
his son.
