John Loye fonds. - 1847-1959.
Biographical sketch :
John Loye was born in 1880 at Dufferin Square in
Montreal. His father, Francis, was a distinguished
policeman in Montreal. He studied at Bishop's
School and became a technical designer. He died in
Montreal 21 November, 1962. John Loye was a
founding member of the Canadian Railroad
Historical Association and its first President in
1932. A devoted historian, he wrote many articles
on Montreal and railways, both for newspapers and
for the publications of the Association. Also very
interested in his Irish ancestry, he became a
member of the United Irish Societies of Montreal
Inc.
An artist on the side, he produced the
designs for the ironwork of the Roddick Gates at
McGill University,
Custodial history :
Fonds transferred to the archives of the Association by its creator and his estate in 1963.
Scope and content :
The John Loye fonds illustrates railway history in
Canada from its beginnings until 1955. The fonds
includes many stories written for newspapers on
the history of Montreal and the railway. The fonds
also relates to various railway companies at the
end of the 19th century, including the Champlain &
St. Lawrence Railway and the Canadian Pacific
Railway. The fonds also includes correspondence
with researchers, amongst them the Pangborn
family. He designed the Association's logo.
The
fonds consists of historical files, press
clippings, correspondence, maps, technical and
non-technical drawings, train schedules, an album
of photographs on the Delaware & Hudson and a few
photographs of the last remnants of the first
railway near La Prairie. Also a collection of
postcards relating to world architecture, and the
railway.
