Charles Melville Hays fonds. - 1878-1941.

Custodial history :
Fonds transferred to the Association archives between 1955 and 1976 by Louise Grier and Clara Scott, daughters of Charles Melville Hays.

Scope and content :
The fonds relates to the relationships between Charles Melville Hays and his family, the administration of the Wabash St. Louis & Pacific Railway and of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The fonds also deals with the sinking of the Titanic.
This fonds includes correspondence, registers of letters, press clippings, a diary and photographs.

Physical description : 0.6 m textual materials. 3 photograph albums. Charles Melville Hays was born 16 May 1856 at Rock Island, Illinois, and married Clara Gregg. They had four daughters Louise, Clara, Marjorie and Orin. He died tragically on the Titanic on 15 April 1912.
Hays began his railway career at 17 with the Passenger Department of the Atlantic and Pacific Railway (Saint-Louis, Missouri). In 1884 he became secretary to the General Manager of the Wabash St. Louis & Pacific Railway. In 1889 he became General Manager and five years later, Vice-President. In 1896 he was made General Manager of the Grand Trunk Railway, becoming President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1905. He was also a director of the Royal Trust Company and a director of the Merchants Bank.
Founding member of the Mount Royal Club, of the St. James Club, the Canada Club, the Hunt Club and other Toronto social clubs.
