Administrative history :
Canadian Car & Foundry was incorporated in 1909. It was the result of a merger between three companies: Rhodes Curry Co. Ltd of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada Car Co. of Montreal (Turcot shops) and Dominion Car & Foundry Co., also of Montreal. Canadian Car & Foundry was originally managed by Nathaniel Curry, formely of Rhodes Curry Co. who moved to Montreal headquarters to assume the leadership. By 1910, Canadian Car & Foundry was the most important builder of rolling stock in Canada. In response to growing demand, Canadian Car & Foundry bought Montreal Steel Works, located in Longue Pointe, in the est end of Montreal, as well as the Ontario Iron & Steel Co. in Welland, Ontario. Thus, Canadian Car & Foundry became the largest Canadian manufacturer of freight cars, passenger cars and tramways. It supplied the national as well as international markets. During the World Wars, Canadian Car & Foundry produced military equipment. In 1957, The A.V. Roe Company of Canada Ltd took control of Canadian Car & Foundry. A short time after, it bought Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, a subsidiary of Eastern Car Company, located in Trenton, Nova Scotia, a company that had specialized in the construction of freight cars since 1912. This transaction was the beginning of a peciliar era where two companies, owned by the same firm, competed mercilesssly for the railway car industry. Although it was the more important of the two, Canada Car Co. was sacrificed for the benefit of its competitor. The Turcot shops closed their doors in 1958 and were sold. In 1962, the Montreal and Amherst shops also closed due to a lack of resources. The remaining shops were managed by Hawker Siddely Canada operating under the name Canadian Steel Foundries.
