Canadian Pacific Railway Navigation Department fonds. - 1881-1937.
Administrative history :
Henry Beatty was born in Ireland in 1834. His
family settled in Ontario when he was only 9 years
old. He married Harriet M. Powell, with whom he
had three children. His son Edward Wentworth was
to become President of the Canadian Pacific
Railway from 1918 to 1943. Henry Beatty died in
1914.
In 1870 he rejoined his kin in the family
business which was the management of a fleet of
boats on the Great Lakes. From 1882 to 1892 he
worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and was
put in charge of the Navigation Department.
Custodial history :
The fonds was transferred to the Association archives in the 1960's by his daughter Mary Beatty.
Scope and content :
The Canadian Pacific Railway Navigation Department
fonds show the operation of the department under
Henry Beatty's direction between 1881 and
1914.
The fonds consists of the registers of
4000 letters sent by Henry Beatty and operations
registers from 1890 to 1892.
