Bombardier fonds. - 1925-1981.
Administrative history :
The American Locomotive Company of Schenectady,
New York (ALCO), manufactured locomotives in
several plants in North America commencing in
1842. In 1904 it bought a manufacturing plant in
Montreal, known as Locomotive and Machine Co. of
Montreal, Ltd., which become the Montreal
Locomotive Works Limited (MLW). In 1904 this plant
produced the first steam locomotive in Montreal.
In 1948, the plant was amalgamated with General
Electric to manufacture diesel-electric
locomotives. Bombardier acquired the plant in 1975
and resold it to General Electric in 1989.
Custodial history :
The fonds was transferred to the Association archives by Bombardier in August, 1991.
Scope and content :
The Bombardier fonds shows the evolution of
diesel-electric locomotives manufactured by
Montreal Locomotive Works in Montreal, as well as
the Schenectady shops of the American Locomotive
Company in the United States, between 1948 and
1964. Both were taken over by Bombardier between
1975 and 1989. The fonds illustrates the complete
process for assembly of a locomotive. The fonds
also includes some documents on railway cars,
accidents and urban transit rolling stock.
The
fonds consists mainly of technical drawings, order
books, photographs and negatives.
Physical description :
34000 engineering and technical drawings. - 10 m textual materials. - 1000 photographs: black and white negatives and nitrate.
General note :
Title of the fonds based on the name of the donor.
Some negatives were destroyed because they were
severely damaged. Nitrate negatives have been
removed from the boxes and stored under safe
conditions. The damaged negatives were separated
from the rest of the fonds for copying.
Certain
negatives have not been inventoried in the finding
aid. The documents in the fonds are in English.
There is an inventory of some of the drawings as
well as an inventory of negatives. See the
Montreal Locomotive Works fonds, P001. There are
no negatives for two photos. There is a list of
negatives separated from the fonds in another
wordprocessing file.
