A word from the President

Welcome to Exporail, the Canadian Railway Museum.

With over 160 pieces of historic railway and tramway rolling stock, an extensive library of books on Canada’s railways, archives holding over 1 million photos, historic documents and artefacts, an operating railway and tramway line, Exporail is Canada’s largest railway museum and one of the largest in the world.

Exporail highlights Canada’s remarkable 175-year railway history and attests to Canadians pride in this unique heritage, as well as to the grand railway adventure that founded Canada. Exporail’s collection reflects Canada’s railway heritage and makes an important contribution to the international railway heritage, while also showcasing new developments in railway technology.

Canada’s railways are a driving force in Canada’s development. They have allowed Canada to achieve seemingly impossible dreams by supporting Canada in its quest for a world based on trade and closer human relationships. They are an efficient, green transportation instrument of the modern world.

Together, let us put our shoulders to the wheel to make Exporail the National Railway Museum of Canada.  Let us ensure that the motion to this effect, adopted by Canada’s Parliament on February 27, 2007, is acted upon by the present government.  This would be a fitting tribute to the many Canadians who, during the last 175 years, have built and operated Canada’s railways and developed Canada.

Exporail is located in Saint-Constant/Delson, Quebec, 20 minutes by car from downtown Montreal and a few miles from the site of Canada’s first railway, the Champlain and St Lawrence Railroad, which ran between Laprairie and St-Jean, Quebec.

Why not pay us a visit?

C. Stephen Cheasley
